UMAMIcatessen DTLA

by J.L

Yesterday was the soft opening of UMAMIcatessen on Broadway downtown Los Angeles. I live upstairs from this location and have watched the build out over the past many months. Of course I wanted to visit the new location have lunch and ask a few questions.

I have eaten at UMAMI’s other locations in LA and the food is the same quality, but with several other menu options. UMAMIcatessen is like four restaurants in one featuring The UMAMI menu, The Cure Menu, PIGG Menu, and Spring Street Coffee, this location also includes a full bar.

The Cure– Is a kosher “style” deli which features traditional sandwiches such as Corned Beef,Pastrami, chicken liver & Lox on Bagel.

PIGG – is “A tribute to all things Pork” and from the menu literally includes all pork parts. With Sandwich titles like Hoof & Mouth and Pork Liver Pate. Our waiter said he was not a huge fan of pork but loved everything PIGG had to offer.

First and foremost I have to say the wait staff is just lovely, friendly ,attentive, and quick. It was opening day the place was full and we were waited on like we were the only ones there. I am a huge fan of good customer service and they get an A+ for that.

If you are a Vegan this place is not for you there are maybe two options The Truffle Beet Salad (if you leave off the ricotta) and fries, Same goes for Vegetarians with only slightly more options The Salad I just mentioned, asst fries, The Earth Burger (which is what I had), and you can substitute a Portobello mushroom top for meat on any burger.

If you are a meat lover this is your place.

The space is open and bright a perfect lunch stop, place to meet for drinks, or meeting spot Downtown.

Our waiter also said there would be a DJ on Fri & Sat nights with a future art gallery space upstairs.

Oh and I did not mention deserts.

They have several options. Fried Donuts made to order. We got the Meyer Lemon Curd, yogurt glazed,freeze-dried blueberries. With had the blueberries in sprinkles on the top comes warm and is filled Meyer lemon. It was different from what I expected but was pretty good.

I wasnt not a fan of any of the other flavors but that’s just my taste.

They also have Soft Serve,Beignets,Sorbet, and Coke Floats.
