“Legend of The Pink Cherry ” Opens this Saturday night at Corey Helford Gallery in Culver city. I dropped by Buff Monsters studio to ask a few questions and get a small preview of the opening.

Essentially this show has two themes and is two openings in one.

For the main part of the show his paintings are a Narrative work.

The ideas behind these paintings are actually based off of quite intense subject matter, knowing where the inspiration comes from is helpful, it makes you appreciate the work even more. I feel this is true I’m most cases but with this show especially because it’s a whole other level of thought. Viewing Buff Monsters work on the surface my immediate reaction is visually stimulated with all the colors and ice cream cones but knowing the underling storylines make me appreciate the paintings intellectually as well.

Buff Monster has always loved Renaissance paintings even though stylistically they are nothing like his work, so for this show that is where he has drawn inspiration.

This show is a celebration of eleven years painting, tying his body of work together  and exploring a narrative. Something he has never done before.

Triumph of Death

The Coned Crusader

The second part of the show celebrates his adoration for the Garbage Pail kids.

The idea to do a sticker set came to Buff a few years ago. He wanted to do it right and also was very important to release the Cards alongside the original paintings.

The first piece of Art Buff ever bought was an original pencil Garbage Pail kids illustration.

Melty Misfit Cards:

His tribute is a very labor intensive multi layered project. There are 30 5×7 original paintings. To mimic the look of the original Garbage Pail Kids he used an airbrush to paint all the backgrounds which is a first for the artist.

Then had come up with a name and story for each character, as well as a description or image for the back of each card.

These cards are printed on custom paper, with custom inks. Each sticker is Kiss cut. They come wrapped in printed wax paper. Full sets come in a Display box with 60 cards wrapped in sets of Seven pieces.

You might get something different with each full set. There are surprises.

I love the contrast between the more serious Narrative theme apposed with the comedy and light heartedness of the Melty Misfits.

All in all I am very much looking forward to this show. the First 50-100 (its undecided yet) people to attend will receive one pack of Melty Misfit cards, so get there early. Also Saturday is Buff Monsters birthday an additional reason to celebrate.

The Box sets are available for $120 in a very limited amount, the packs will not be sold individually. And there are also really cool prints available. 🙂
